THE GULF OF AMERICA
Trump renames the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America"
In his first day in office, U.S. president Donald Trump announced that he was going to be renaming the body of water between Mexico, the U.S. and Cuba from the 'Gulf of Mexico' to the 'Gulf of America'.
After the announcement, Trump signed an executive order which made the promise official. This being an executive order means that he doesn't need to gain approval by the American congress to get it passed; as the president, he can make that decision for the country by himself.
But does Trump really have the power to change the names of international waters? Well, it's a bit complicated. Trump can officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico in any official U.S. documents, and pretty much anything that the country's government produces. However, Trump does not have the power or authority to force other countries or independent companies to recognize the body of water as the 'Gulf of America'. On Google Earth, for instance, it's still labeled as the Gulf of Mexico.
